How crashing my car made me a runner

At the start of this year, I destroyed my car. It ended up giving me one of the healthiest habits I've ever built.

I was speeding on a highway, the road was a bit wet, and I lost control. I oversteered, the car spun a few times, and it finally stopped against the barrier dividing the lanes. The car was completely destroyed.

But this isn't a post about the car.

After the crash, I started running to university. I live about 2 km from my classes — a little over a mile — and it turns out I get there even faster running than I did driving.

The bigger surprise was what it did to me. I never used to run. Running was actually one of my weak points. But I ended up enjoying it. I downloaded Strava, and since I ran the same route every day, I became the "Local Legend" on it — the person with the most runs on that stretch. That turned out to be really motivating.

So I started going further on weekends. First 3 or 4 km, then 5, 6, 7. Now I'm at 10, 11, 12. Next goal: a half marathon. After that, the full one.

It all started with something bad. It turned into one of the best habits I have.
