Remove what doesn't belong

The statue is already inside the block. You just have to remove everything that isn't it.

Recently, I started wood carving — the first step toward my goal: sculpting marble. Wood is where you learn the craft before you earn the stone. It quickly became my favorite way to reset between work sessions.

What I find most beautiful is the amount of effort it takes to turn a block into the shape you want. It's literal, raw, hard physical work. I made the mistake of buying a really hard wood — soft wood is usually better for carving — so trust me when I say physical effort.

But it reminds me of improvement in general. You put in the hard work, and over time you watch the piece take the shape you want.

Which brings me back to where I started: the shape you want is already in there. The work is just removing what doesn't belong.

And at the end, you can look back at what you've built and remember all the sacrifice, time, and effort you put into it.

What's something you're shaping right now — slowly, one cut at a time?
