The futon test
Every morning, my bed tells me how well I slept.
About a month ago, I swapped my bed for a Japanese shikibuton — a traditional floor futon — on a tatami mat. I'm really enjoying it.
More space
The biggest gain was space. The futon folds up, so during the day it works as a couch, and at night I unfold it into a bed. With the room open, I can use the tatami to stretch and do yoga, and the whole room just feels bigger.
The daily ritual
There's a catch: every morning, the futon has to be aired out. Air needs to pass under it and through the tatami, so I fold it into an upside-down U and stand it up. Some days, that's genuinely hard — I have to find the exact position where it balances without falling over.
The morning test
And that's what I find most interesting: how it goes reflects my mental state.
When I wake up well, with a clear mind, I get it balanced easily — and if it falls, I just try again. On the days I'm tired, I can't get it to stand straight, and every time it falls, I get frustrated.
Without planning it, the futon became a quick daily check on how I slept and how I'm waking up.
What's a small daily task that tells you how you're doing?
